Quan Phuong Thanh, a female director based in Ho Chi Minh City, received a scholarship to graduate from the S. A. Gerasimov All-Russian University of Cinematography (VGIK). Upon returning to Vietnam, Thanh directed numerous short films, commercials, music videos, and web series for famous artists in the country. Additionally, she has created several short films competing at various international film festivals. Her short films often explore themes of women, families, and contemporary middle-class Vietnamese people, highlighting their vulnerability, resilience, and struggles against adversities. In her own words, Thanh said, "I make films to tell my own stories, stories of my friends, my loved ones, which we don't share with each other in our daily lives."
Thanh's notable short films include: "EVE AND EVE" - Official Selection at the International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival in Turkey; "DAY ONE" competing for the main prize at the Macau International Short Film Festival; "LAM" - another short film competing at the Toronto International Women Film Festival. Her most recent short film, "A Scene by the Sea", has not only been streamed on the CinemaWorld platform but also screened at prestigious events such as the Moscow International Film Festival, the Hanoi International Film Festival, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (MoCA) in South Korea.
In 2019, Thanh was selected to Anh Hung Tran Director's workshop as part of the Autumn Meeting. Thanh also became the youngest jury member of NETPAC at the Moscow International Film Festival. In 2024, She won the Best Series Script award at the Script Lab of the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival. She is currently the founder of Brave Writers Room and a professor of Film Production at Hoa Sen University. Recently, she has served as an ambassador for the Asian Short Film Competition and as a jury member for the Orenburg East West Film Festival in Russia.
